We set up Skopeo as a spin-out from our role in developing new survey guidance for birds in 2018.

We were responding, then as now, to an industry need for more specialised, sustainable approaches to resourcing and interpreting ornithological survey data.

We believe that the competence (and passion!) for birds in the UK and Ireland is mostly found outside of commercial ecology, and that highly specialised surveys should be undertaken by dedicated specialist ornithologists, whoever and wherever they are.

We are invested in the monitoring and ongoing conservation of birds in the UK and Ireland.

We believe that low-impact development is only possible with high quality survey data, and subsequent assessment by an expert, impartial ornithologist.

By using our network of competent, local surveyors, we are able to maintain this impartiality, while keeping the carbon-footprint associated with travel to survey sites to a minimum, and keeping development investment inside local economies.

The purpose of a breeding bird survey is not only to measure the diversity of birds within a survey area, but also to assess the conservation value of those assemblages in a local and national context.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are dedicated ornithologists and co-wrote the Bird Survey Guidelines published in 2018.

We maintain a network of competent bird surveyors across the UK and Ireland, which allows us to respond quickly to the resourcing needs of our clients, while keeping our carbon footprint low.

Our surveyors are drawn from all walks of life, but all share a passion for birds and birdwatching. Generally, our surveyors are freelance ornithologists, or working in the conservation  or academic sectors.

Our clients vary, from small regional ecological consultancies to the international engineering businesses, statutory nature conservation bodies and conservation charities.

We represent our surveyors on behalf of clients, and provide industry standard insurance, competitive pay, access to equipment and exciting opportunity to see birds while contributing to sustainable development projects.

We require all of our surveyors to provide us with some personal details and an assessment of their competency.

If your interested in joining our network, please contact us via the webform or email on contact@skopeo.co.uk.

We co-wrote the current bird survey guidelines for commercial application, and continue to sit on the steering group that oversees commercial bird surveys and competency.

Unlike conventional consultancies we are deeply specialised in ornithology. This allows us to deliver high quality bird survey data, assessment and interpretation for our clients. Using a of local surveyors allows us to  maintain a low carbon footprint while keeping development investment inside local economies.

We currently cover all of the UK and the island of Ireland, inland and offshore.

We strive to turn around bird surveys and subsequent reporting quickly, within appropriate survey windows.

We aim to get surveys started within a week of confirmation, provided we have all the necessary access information.

Please contact us for more information.

Yes! Our reporting ranges from qualitative reports after surveys to help with data interpretation, to full reporting of bird survey data.
